The mosquito situation in Svalbard, Raudfjorden is relatively mild compared to other regions around the world. Due to the harsh Arctic climate, mosquitoes are not as abundant as in more temperate areas. However, during the summer months, particularly July and August, mosquito activity can increase significantly, especially in areas with standing water and vegetation.

Year round mosquito forecast

Despite the lower abundance of mosquitoes in Svalbard, Raudfjorden, it is important to be cautious as there have been cases of mosquito-borne diseases reported in the region. The most common mosquito-borne disease in the Arctic is tularemia, also known as rabbit fever. This bacterial infection can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites and can cause symptoms such as fever, skin ulcers, and swollen lymph nodes.

In addition to tularemia, there have been occasional reports of West Nile virus in the Arctic region, including Svalbard. While the risk of contracting these diseases from mosquito bites is relatively low, it is still important to take precautions such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and using insect repellent when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito season.
